Based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, this is the story of four New England sisters - Jo (Katharine Hepburn), Amy (Joan Bennett), Meg (Frances Dee), and Beth (Jean Parker) - who must deal with hardship and privation while their father fights in the Civil War. Although studio executives at the time were hesitant about backing a film based on a novel about a group of women during the Civil War, producer David O. Selznick was eventually able to convince them to green light the picture, which turned out to be both a critical and commercial success.
